There it was, plain as that.

I’d given her the password so she could pay Dad’s bills while I was away. I’d thought I was being useful. I’d thought it was one less thing for Elena to handle. I never changed it. I never checked the statements. I never asked Dad whether he was still okay with it.

“I didn’t tell you to take his money,” I said.

“I didn’t steal anything.”

“You moved it into your account.”

“I was going to put it back.”

“When?”

Her eyes filled, but she didn’t cry. “I was trying to keep the business from going under.”

I knew she’d been scared about money. I knew we’d had fights about the mortgage and the credit card. I knew she’d been working late and getting calls she wouldn’t explain. I didn’t know she’d used Dad’s account. I also hadn’t wanted to know why she kept asking me to sign things without reading them.

I wanted to be the husband who could fix it. So I let her handle it. That’s what I did.

The bank investigator explained that $83,416 had gone into Vanessa’s business account. About $19,700 was still there. The bank had frozen it that morning after Dad’s lawyer provided the records. The rest had been spent or moved. That didn’t mean we knew where every dollar went, but it meant there was a paper trail.

Vanessa leaned toward the desk. “You can’t just freeze my account.”

“We can,” the investigator said. “It’s under review.”

She looked at me again. “You know I was going to fix this.”

I said nothing.

She said, “Marcus.”

I still didn’t answer.

It was not some brave thing. I was trying to think of what I could say that wouldn’t make my part worse. I had given her access. I had left Dad to manage his own questions while I drove across three states. I had stood at the church and called Elena a thief before I knew one fact.

I had made myself the injured one because that was easier than being the absent one.

The county investigator asked whether I knew Vanessa was using Dad’s money.

“No,” I said. “I didn’t know about the transfers.”

“Did you give her the account password?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell her she could use the money for her business?”

“No.”

Vanessa let out a hard breath. “You’re really doing this?”

I looked at her and said, “I’m answering the question.”

She shook her head like I’d changed sides. I don’t know what the right word is when you finally stop making excuses for someone you love because the paper is sitting right there.

Sam passed the envelope with my name on it to me. “You can read this privately, if you’d rather.”

Everybody was watching. I didn’t want that. I opened it anyway.

Dad’s letter was short. He wrote that he loved me and was sorry I had to learn about the money this way. He said the account had been meant for his care and for settling the house, not for either of us to spend. Then he wrote that he’d asked Elena to keep the key because he thought I might be tempted to take her side or Vanessa’s side before I knew what the records showed.

I stopped reading there.

It hurt because Dad had known me well enough to worry I’d defend the wrong person. It also hurt because he’d been right.

At the bottom, he’d written one sentence in darker ink. I could hear the grandfather clock ticking behind me. I’d heard it in that room since I was a kid, but I’d never noticed how loud it was until then.

Vanessa said, “He knew I was struggling.”

Sam gathered the papers back into the folders. The investigators told her they’d contact her about the review. She could get a lawyer. They weren’t taking her away from the house.
